Old Rugged Stump: Here I Stand

The Old Rugged Stump

Here I Stand

Who are your heroes?

Superheroes are a popular topic this year. I have heard countless discussions on which heroes are the favorites, which ones are better than others, and what special abilities, cool gadgets, or personality traits define a hero.

My first thought in planning for the next season of the Old Rugged Stump was to dig into the "Hero chapter of the Bible." Hebrews 11 is filled with great men and women of faith, who trusted in God. Through them, God worked many wonders, and yet the author writes, "yet none of them received the promise they were given." My second thought was to write on some of the character traits that we associate with heroes - whether they are super heroes or people we look up to - and Philippians 4:8 came to mind as a great list to reference.

Over the next few months, I've decided to combine the two ideas. Using these two sections of scripture as a guide, I hope to spend some time this year looking deeper into the lives of some "heroes" of faith. My goal is to incorporate some of these explorations into my life, into our programs here at Walcamp, and into this eDevotion.

I invite you to join me in this study. Pull out your Bibles, a favorite super-powered beverage, and perhaps some paper and writing tools to jot down some notes or quick sketches as we go.

My first challenge - for myself and for you - is to read through these two sections: Philippians 4:8 and Hebrews 11. As you read, start noting what sets these men and women apart from the rest of their neighbors. What things in their lives are different from yours and mine? What things are similar?

Who are your heroes? I would be happy to hear your thoughts and comments. Thanks for joining me on this adventure!

Stand strong,
Ben "Mufasa" Konrad

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
-- Ephesians 6:13
