Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman- Commentary by Brad Weiss

Luke 8:40-56-NIV

40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years,[a] but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.

When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.”

46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”

47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”

50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”

53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened

As always Jesus seeks to teach us on so many levels…….

Here we have two very different people from polar opposite ends of the economic and social spectrum, needing the exact same thing---- a healing touch from God.

I am always amazed at how Jesus responds appropriately to everyone. We have two main people in this incredible story 1.) Jarius- the ruler of the synagogue and his only 12 year daughter

2.) A woman subject to bleeding for 12 years. Note: the age of the daughter and the term of illness. Twelve can be found in 187 places in God's word. Revelation alone has 22 occurrences of the number. The meaning of 12, which is considered a perfect number, is that it symbolizes God's power and authority.

It is an amusing side line how the disciples reply to Jesus comment about “who touched me” Peter said…Master the people are crowding  and pressing against you- thank you for that blinding flash of the obvious.

It is significant to note that the woman’s bleeding made her ceremonial unclean and that she KNEW she should not approach the Rabbi but only want to touch the edge of his cloak or more precisely the tassels of his garment which signified that he was indeed a Rabbi. She was desperate for healing that no one else could do.

The ruler of the Synagogue certainly could have sent someone to ask Jesus to come and help, but he went himself, he came and fell at Jesus’ feet and pleaded, he too was desperate for healing that no one else could do.

So the woman seeing that see could not go unnoticed came trembling and fell at His feet NOTE: the same position as Jarius, in the presence of all the people she told why she had  touched him and that she had been instantly healed, nothing else mattered to her .

Jesus responds, Daughter your faith has healed you, go in peace.

Then we learn that Jarius daughter has died, they said do not bother the teacher any more. I wonder what Jarius was feeling right now… was he present to see the woman healed of her bleeding ?             And  yet Jesus turns to Jarius and rebukes his growing fear and says…just believe and she will be healed.

IF Jarius was present to see the woman healed it would be easier to trust and believe, because now there is a foundation to believe, there is visual evidence of how Jesus can heal. So many times in our lives we also demand a sign or some piece of evidence to allow ourselves to have more faith in the one who controls all things.
